Facial Skull X-Ray
When Is a Facial Skull X-Ray Necessary?
In addition to sinus infections, the digital X-ray can detect fractures, bone tumors, fluid buildup in the sinuses, and inflammation-induced opacities. Repeated X-rays taken a few days apart allow doctors to track the progression, worsening, or improvement of conditions like sinusitis.
If further imaging is needed for an accurate diagnosis, additional tests like CT or MRI can be performed, as well as angiography to examine the brain's blood vessels. Frequently recommended by ENT specialists, CT or MRI scans of the neck soft tissues can provide detailed images of the pharynx, tonsils, thyroid, and upper lung, highlighting injuries, inflammation, or tumors.
Procedure for a Facial Skull X-Ray
Before the exam, the patient removes all clothing and jewelry from the upper body. The radiology assistant positions the patient for the X-ray, and a lead apron is placed around the waist to protect against radiation.
During the procedure, the patient must remain still and follow breathing instructions. The process is entirely painless, though the cold X-ray panel might cause some minor discomfort. No special preparation is required before the exam.
X-Ray Report and Interpretation
A written report based on the X-ray images is provided within 2-4 business days, either electronically or in print upon request. The report will describe whether there are fractures, dislocations, bone thinning, calcifications, or fluid in the sinuses. The radiologist may recommend further imaging, such as a cranial CT scan or angiography.
