Foot X-Ray
foot X-ray can detect fractures, dislocations, changes in bone alignment, osteoporosis, or abnormal calcifications. The X-ray images are taken from the top of the foot in both straight and semi-oblique positions, as well as from a side view. Additional specialized images, such as those of the heel bone, may also be taken.
Of the 26 bones in the human foot, the heel bone is the largest. The heel provides support for the body’s weight, which subjects it to significant pressure with every step.
The foot X-ray clearly shows the bones of the foot, including the tarsal, metatarsal, and toe bones. The tarsal region includes the talus, calcaneus (heel bone), navicular, the three cuneiform bones, and the cuboid bone. The metatarsals are long bones, and the big toe contains only two bones. Near the head of the first metatarsal, two sesamoid bones can be seen, embedded in tendons to protect them.
Foot X-Ray Procedure
Before the examination, the patient removes all upper body clothing and jewelry. The assistant positions the patient for the X-ray and places a lead apron around their waist for protection.
It’s important for the patient to remain still and follow breathing instructions during the procedure. The X-ray is completely painless, with the only potential discomfort coming from the cold X-ray board. No prior preparation is needed for this examination.
The examination typically takes around 5 minutes. A written report is prepared after the examination, which the patient will receive electronically or, if requested, in printed form within 2-4 business days.
