Pelvic X-Ray
When is a Pelvic X-Ray Recommended?
A pelvic X-ray shows the pelvis, the lower limb girdle, and the sacrum. The pelvic bone consists of the hip bone, ischium, and pubic bone, all of which are paired bones. The pelvis connects the lower limbs to the spinal column.
Pelvic X-rays are typically required after accidents, in cases of developmental disorders, hip osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), suspected inflammatory processes affecting the hip joints, or tumors, as well as post-surgery of the pelvic girdle. In cases of hip trauma (such as femoral neck fractures), additional specific images are taken of the affected area.
When is an Anteroposterior (AP) Pelvic X-Ray Recommended?
The anteroposterior (AP) pelvic X-ray is used to examine the bones of the pelvis and surrounding structures, aiding in the diagnosis of various pathological conditions and injuries.
How a Pelvic X-Ray is Performed
Before the examination, the patient removes all clothing and jewelry from the upper body. The assistant positions the patient for the X-ray and places a lead apron around the waist to protect from radiation.
It is important for the patient to remain still during the examination and follow any breathing instructions. The procedure is completely painless, with the only discomfort being the cool surface of the X-ray panel. No prior preparation is needed for the examination.
The examination takes about 5 minutes. An official report is always prepared after the examination, which the patient will receive within 2-4 business days either electronically or in printed form, based on preference.
